I'd never eaten a noisier or funnier meal in my life. Lucas and his brothers didn't let up on the insults, and I could barely chew because I was laughing so hard.

“There’s Lucas, shaving cream everywhere. He’s covered in it. So is Atlas,” Duncan said.

“How old was he?” I asked.

“Four? Atlas was a baby,” Rocker said.

I didn't know the age difference between them, but I had this vision of a tiny Lucas covered in shaving cream, and I couldn't help smiling.

"So Rocker and I are trying to clean him up before he gets in trouble, but he tasted the shaving cream, and now he's crying. We couldn't shut him up. We were supposed to be watching him for a minute while my mother went to the garden."

“How long was she gone?” I asked.

“Five minutes. Tops.”

"And Lucas decided that moment he needed to play with shaving cream?"

Lucas shrugged. "I don't remember what I was thinking."

Rocker picked up the story. "Needless to say, our mother came in and saw the whole situation. Duncan and I were sent to our rooms. Mom cleaned up Atlas and Lucas, and then they were in time out. If you ask my mother now, she'll think it was funny. She didn't at the time."

I couldn't imagine having six boys, well, six children, but boys. I glanced at Lucas, who was slumped over his food. I guess he didn't think the story was funny.

I felt as if I'd passed some test and I was part of them now. I didn't know why, but everyone treated me like family and not a guest. For my whole life, it had only been my father and myself. We got along great. He'd never dated, and now I understood why since he was still married to my mother.

That made me pause—my mother.

Lucas nudged me. “You okay?”

"Just a lot going on," I said.

“We can talk if you’d like.”

“We should help clean up,” I said.

“Amber and I will do this. You guys have stuff to do.”

Everyone brought the items into the kitchen, and I turned on the water to fill the sink. Lucas loaded the dishwasher and got it running. He wrapped his arms around me from behind, resting his head on mine. "You okay?"

“I just have a lot to think about.”

"Tell me one thing. If we share the burden, it will be lighter."

His words warmed me as I washed dishes and put them in the rack. “I have a mother.”

"Everyone has a mother."

"I always knew I had a mother somewhere out there. I often wondered why I hadn't been good enough for her to want to stay."

He squeezed me tighter. "It was never about you."

"No, and I found that out for sure. My parents agreed that I would be safer in the human world. My mother didn't abandon me. She made a sacrifice for me."

“Tell me the whole story,” he said.

I told him what was in the letter from my father and what Aslan had filled in.

“You mean all this time you were sure you were the reason that she left?”

“I was positive.
